Monefy is one of the most downloaded expense trackers: more than 10 million installs on Google Play. You log each expense in two taps and see in a chart where your money goes. It does that well. What it does not tell you is how much you will have left on the last day of the month, and that is the question Xpenses answers.
Monefy and Xpenses, point by point
| Monefy | Xpenses | |
|---|---|---|
| The question it answers | What you spent, by category | What you will have left at the end of the month, per account and day by day |
| Daily effort | Log every expense as you make it | Enter your bills and income once; each month just tick them paid |
| Recurring payments | Yes | Yes, with a due day, a reminder that day and late bills flagged |
| Month-end forecast | Not in its Google Play description | Yes, free, for the months ahead too |
| Sharing with a partner | Syncing through your own Google Drive or Dropbox | Shared wallet: each with their own login, a history of who marked each payment, one subscription for both (Pro) |
| Bank connection | No | No; import Excel or CSV statements if you like |
| Price | Free, with in-app purchases | Free with one account; Pro $3.99/month or $34.99/year |
Where Monefy falls short
- It looks backwards: it shows what you already spent. By the time you see you will not make it, the month is half gone.
- It depends on your discipline: skip logging a coffee or a grocery run and the numbers stop adding up. Fixed bills, most of what you spend, repeat every month and should only need entering once.
- For couples, sharing means syncing files between devices through your own cloud, not two people with their own accounts on the same budget.
Where Monefy is better
If you want to log every small purchase on the spot, in several currencies, and look at the category pie, Monefy is quick and simple. Xpenses is not built for logging every coffee: it is built so the month does not catch you out.
Switch without starting over
Export your data from Monefy and upload it to Xpenses: it finds what repeats every month (rent, utilities, subscriptions, salary) and proposes it for review before anything is saved. If it does not recognise the columns, you pick them. You can also try it first without signing up, with sample data. The steps are in move to Xpenses.
