There is no single right way to manage money as a couple. What matters is that you both know which costs are shared, who pays what and how much you will have left at the end of the month, without arguing over every bill.
Three common setups
- Everything joint: one account for everything. Simple, but it needs a lot of trust and agreement on personal spending.
- Everything separate: each person pays some bills. Independent, but the split easily stops being fair.
- Mixed: a joint account for household costs and your own accounts for personal spending. The most common choice.
Split equally or by income?
With similar incomes, half each. Otherwise many couples split in proportion: if one earns 60% of the total, they pay 60% of the shared bills. Our couple budget template does that calculation for you.
What a couples budgeting app should have
- A login for each person, not a shared password.
- The same bills for both, and who marked each payment.
- A shared forecast of what is left at the end of the month.
- One subscription covering both of you.
That is how the Xpenses Pro shared wallet works: invite your partner by e-mail, each of you signs in with your own account, and you both see and tick the same bills, for €2.99 a month for the two of you.
