A budgeting app that does not connect to your bank

Why some people prefer a budget app without bank access, and what you gain and lose.

Updated: 2026-10-08

Many finance apps ask you to connect your bank to import transactions. It is convenient, but it is not the only option, and there are good reasons to prefer an app that does not connect.

What you gain without a bank connection

  • Privacy: no app has access to your transactions or your passwords.
  • Reliability: bank connections sometimes break (password changes, consent renewals every few months) and the app is left without data. A manual app always works.
  • Awareness: adding your bills once makes you know what you pay, which is half the job.

What you give up

  • Day-to-day spending does not come in by itself: you add it or count it as an estimate.
  • You mark bills as paid yourself (in Xpenses, one tap).

Where Xpenses fits

Xpenses starts from what repeats — salary, rent, bills, subscriptions — which is what really decides whether you make it to month end. Add it once and see the forecast every month. For variable spending, count a realistic figure or add it as another item.

Try it with the month-end calculator.

Already using another app? Export your history and Xpenses finds your bills for you. Move to Xpenses from Spendee, Wallet, YNAB or Fintonic
