YNAB has a well-respected method: give every dollar a job before you spend it. It also takes learning and costs $14.99 a month or $99 a year. People who switch to Xpenses usually keep the essentials: knowing how much they will have left and never forgetting a bill, without assigning every dollar.
Why people switch to Xpenses
| YNAB | Xpenses | |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Zero-based budget: every dollar to a category | Forecast: add bills and income, see what you will have left |
| Getting started | You need to learn the method | Two minutes, less if you import your plan |
| Languages | English | English and Spanish |
| Couples | The subscription can be shared | Shared wallet with a separate login for each person (Pro) |
| Price | $14.99/month or $99/year | Free with one account; Pro €2.99/month or €24.99/year |
What you bring from YNAB
- Open YNAB on the web (exporting is not available in the mobile app).
- Click your plan's name at the top left, then Export Plan.
- You get two files: upload the one with your transactions (Register) to Xpenses.
We read its Outflow and Inflow columns and find your recurring bills, subscriptions and income.
What changes
- You don't split every dollar into envelopes: you see what you will have left and decide what to do with it.
- No bank connection: one-off expenses are yours to add if you want them in the forecast.
If YNAB's method works for you and you want a demanding system to change your habits, it is still a great tool.
Switch in four steps
- Export your transactions from YNAB (how is above).
- Create your free Xpenses account and add your bank account with today's balance.
- Go to Settings, "Import from another app or your bank", choose YNAB and upload the file.
- Review what we found, untick what you no longer pay and tap "Add".
Importing is free on every plan, and the file is deleted as soon as the import is done.
