You do not have to type your bills one by one. Xpenses can find them in a file you already have, or in photos of your banking app. Nothing is saved until you have looked at what it found. Importing is free.
Open it from Settings > Your data > Import from another app or your bank.
Find your bills in a file
- In Import from, choose where the file comes from: another budgeting app, your bank, or a spreadsheet. Xpenses shows how to get the file out of it.
- Choose the File: CSV or Excel, up to 5 MB.
- Tap Find my bills.
- Review What we found: name, amount, how often, category. Change what is wrong, untick what you no longer pay, and import.
From a history of movements, Xpenses keeps only what repeats at a steady interval and is still going: the rent every month, the insurance every year. Twelve months of history let it find the yearly bills too. A spreadsheet with one row per bill (name, amount and, if you have them, how often and the due day) is taken row by row.
The imported bills start this month, unpaid. Your history itself is not copied: Xpenses plans from now on. Coming from a specific app? See moving to Xpenses from another app.
Import your bank statement
Import a bank statement brings in what actually moved on your account: Xpenses keeps the movements, and with Pro it matches them to your bills and ticks them as paid.
- Download the movements from your online banking. Xpenses reads the usual statement formats (CAMT, MT940, OFX, QFX, QIF) and the CSV or Excel files of many banks.
- Choose the account, the file, and tap Read the file.
- Check the matches: each movement next to the bill it pays. Untick a wrong one; the ones you accept are remembered for next time.
Two rules keep your numbers right:
- Your balance today stays as it is. The movements add history and tell Xpenses what is already paid; they do not change the balance you typed.
- The same file imported twice does not create duplicates.
An import can be undone from the movements page: its movements are removed and your balance stays. Money moved between two of your own accounts is recognised as a transfer, not as spending.
No file? Photograph your banking app
Under No file? Photograph your banking app, tap Take or choose photos and pick screenshots or photos of the list of movements in your bank's app. Several photos of one long list are joined where they overlap. They are read on your device and not uploaded. Each amount is checked against the balances shown; a movement that could not be confirmed starts unticked, so you look at it first.
Receipts and invoices
For one purchase at a time, use the receipt reader in the add sheet.
